Eating well is good for your mental as well as your physical health. The brain requires nutrients just like your heart, lungs or muscles do. But which foods are particularly important to keep our grey matter happy and healthy?

Number One: Opt for wholegrains.

Like everything else in your body, the brain cannot work without energy. The ability to concentrate and focus comes from an adequate, steady supply of energy – in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing wholegrains with a low-GI, which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally alert throughout the day. Opt for ‘brown’ wholegrain cereals, granary bread, rice and pasta.

Number Two: Eat oily fish.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be made by the body which means they must be obtained through diet. The most effective omega-3 fats occur naturally in oily fish in the form of EPA and DHA. The main sources of oily fish include salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers.

Number Three: Snack on blueberries.

Evidence accumulated at Tufts University in the United States suggests that the consumption of blueberries may be effective in improving or delaying short term memory loss. They’re widely available, but you can also look out for dark red and purple fruits and veg which contain the same protective compounds called anthocyanins.

Number Four: Eat more tomatoes.

There is good evidence to suggest that lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes, could help protect against the kind of free radical damage to cells which occurs in the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s. Favour cooked tomatoes and enjoy with a little olive oil to optimise absorption and efficacy.

Number Five: Add vitality with vitamins.

Certain B vitamins – B6, B12 and folic acid – are known to reduce levels of a compound called homocysteine in the blood. Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with increased risk of stroke, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. A study of a group of elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment found that after two years of intervention with high doses of B6, B12 and folic acid there was significantly less brain shrinkage compared to a subset given placebo treatment. Opt for B-rich foods like chicken, fish, eggs and leafy greens.

Number Six: Get a blackcurrant boost.

Vitamin C has long been thought to have the power to increase mental agility and protect against age-related brain degeneration including dementia and Alzheimer’s. One of the best sources of this vital vitamin are blackcurrants. Others include red peppers, citrus fruits and broccoli.

Number Seven: Pick up pumpkin seeds

Richer in zinc than many other seeds, pumpkin seeds supply this valuable mineral which is vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills. These little seeds are also full of stress-busting magnesium, B vitamins and tryptophan, the precursor to the good mood chemical serotonin.

Broccoli is great source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower. Researchers have reported that because broccoli is high in compounds called glucosinolates, it can slow the breakdown of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, which we need for the central nervous system to perform properly and to keep our brains and our memories sharp.

On a vegetarian diet, you can gain weight by choosing your foods thoughtfully.

NUMBER ONE: UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VEGETARIANISM AND VEGAN

Vegans are all vegetarians, but not all vegetarians are vegans. A vegetarian diet cuts out all meat products — beef, poultry, sometimes fish, and so on — but a vegan diet eliminates all animal and animal-based food products. This means vegans do not eat dairy products (such as milk, yogurt, butter, cheese) and eggs. Vegans therefore base their diets around nutrient-rich plants.[1] The diet of a vegan is more restrictive, and therefore more of a challenge to get complete nutrition (although of course it is possible), and for underweight individuals, may make it a bit more difficult to gain weight.

NUMBER TWO: CALCULATE YOUR CALORIE NEEDS

A calorie is a unit of energy in food that, when consumed, is either used to fuel the body’s activities or is stored as fat.[2] When trying to lose weight, you want a calorie deficit, meaning you burn more calories through activity than you take in through food. To gain weight, you do the opposite: eat more calories than you burn in the course of a day. A vegetarian diet offers many calorie-rich options that will help you increase caloric intake without having to cut down on the exercise or activity that keeps you healthy.

NUMBER THREE: CONTINUE EATING HEALTHY CALORIES

The most obvious way to gain weight is to eat unhealthy, fatty vegan options like French fries or sugary pastries. But this is typically not what a person who is underweight actually needs. While there is plenty of fat and calories, these foods are lacking in nutrients such as protein, calcium, fiber, and other important needs for a healthy body.

NUMBER FOUR: EAT PROTEIN-RICH FOOD TO BUILD MUSCLE MASS

A lack of protein is typically the main issue seen with vegan and vegetarian diets. Those following these diets should consistently watch for complete protein. Complete proteins are necessary due to their complete panel of amino acids. However, vegans and vegetarians can consume various protein options that complement one another (called complementary proteins) to form a complete protein that has all 9 essential amino acids. They can also simply consume complete proteins such as garbanzo beans, spirulina, and flax seeds. An example of combined protein would be brown rice and beans.

NUMBER FIVE: EXPLORE SOY ALTERNATIVES

Soy protein is the vegan’s best friend, and is even thought to lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels.[7] However, many vegans do not believe that the consumption of soy is healthy. Tofu and tempeh don’t have much flavor on their own, but they take on the flavor of whatever they’re cooked with while increasing your protein intake. Some people object to tofu’s smooth texture, so you might add TVP (textured vegetable protein) to dishes that need protein that feels like ground meat — tacos, pasta sauces, etc.

You put in on your face in mask form which does wonders for your skin, so why not try actually eating it and see the benefits. Eaten in moderation, the monounsaturated fats you ingest will clear, soft and smooth skin.

Number 5: Eat oats:

Very high in soluble fiber, and complex carbohydrates. It is also high in iron, manganese, phosphorus, calcium, Vitamins B and E, and silicon. Silicon is crucial for healthy skin to maintain collagen levels.

Number 8: Intensify the colors of foods you choose:

dark and bright ones — for carotenoids, fiber, flavonoids. Choose fruits and vegetables that have deep, intense colors:
Yellow, orange, green and red hues: eat papayas, mangoes, peaches, pineapple, strawberries, squash; yellow, green and red peppers; tomatoes (raw green tomatoes are poison), cantaloupe, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, dark green leafy veggies, seaweed (including brown seaweed called ecklonia cava).

Number 9: Cut-out white foods, including:

Stop using white sugar, all white flour products, including “enriched” bread,
Avoid white rice, white potatoes; so, instead, eat whole grains and multigrain products, sweet potatoes.
Eliminate white shortenings and its cousin: yellow colored margarine, called “soft, buttery spread” which are not butter at all and are unhealthy.
